| The Best Birthday Cake Ever (According to my 8-Year-Old) Posted: 06 Aug 2012 12:20 PM PDT 
My oldest daughter turns 8 years old today. Wow, where did the time go?!? She's growing up so quickly...
As the middle child of five, she's had to do a lot of sharing in her short lifetime, and this year her birthday was no exception. We booked a party for her at our local pool earlier this summer, and it somehow morphed into a birthday/baseball party when my husband invited the players from my boys' baseball team at the end of the season. Luckily, she's pretty easy-going, so she took it all in stride. I wanted to make sure that she didn't feel slighted though, so I decided we'd order her an extra special cake, especially since we weren't planning to do any decorations at the pool since they just blew away last year. 
We've ordered our cakes from The Bakery at Walmart for as long as I can remember. I'm not really a fan of frosting, but I absolutely adore their non-dairy whipped frosting. It's light and fluffy and, most importantly, not overly sweet -- I highly recommend it! 
We've always ordered decorated sheet cakes in the past, but as I mentioned before, we wanted something a little more unusual this year, so we chose a design from their tiered cakes. Featuring edible stars and bright colors, I knew this was a cake that Camden would be crazy about. 
The look on her face when we brought out her cake was priceless. She was every bit as thrilled about it as I had hoped and more, declaring it "the best birthday cake ever"! In my experience, a pretty cake isn't always necessarily a tasty cake, but this one was delicious. A number of parents asked me where we got it from after I'd finished serving everyone, and were they ever surprised when I answered. I'm sure you're probably wondering how much the cake cost, so I'll tell you it was $48 -- which probably sounds like a lot, especially when compared to making a cake from a mix. But when I factor in the time I didn't have to spend baking and decorating, it sounds a whole lot more reasonable... And when you consider that a dozen cupcakes from the fancy bakery downtown costs $33 gasp! and this cake served 55 people, well, it sounds like a downright bargain. I will absolutely order another of these cakes the next time we host a large birthday party for one of the kids. Happy Birthday, Camden!!! P.S.
